VARSITY REGION TOURNAMENT May 3rd & 4th

VIKINGS HEADED TO STATE IN 4 out of 5 Positions!
On Thursday May 3rd the PG Boys Tennis team headed to Riverton for the Region 4 Region Tournament.  With the Vikings ending their season 7-3 they had secured two #1 positions (3rd singles Nick Olsen & 1st Doubles Quen Wilson & Jacob Eddington).  Two # 4 positions (1st singles Hayden de Hoyos & 2nd doubles team Zach Olsen & Ryan Clifford), and one #3 spot (2nd singles Jake Harris) for the region tournament.  Any position higher then third is a automatic ticket to State.  So the Vikings had to win their first match on Thursday to get to State.  It was a very, very windy day in Riverton which made playing conditions very tricky but the Vikings managed to pull out victories in all spots except for #2 doubles.  Zach and Ryan played some tough tennis but lost a heartbreaker in the 3rd set to Lehi.

2S) Jack Harris was def. by Blairt Robbins (LP) 5-7, 0-6

Day 2  - Friday May 4th.  Then weather was better and their was not as much wind today.  With the wins yesterday, today was all about trying to get a better seeding position for the State Tournament and the season ending Region position.  The Vikings came out a little flat on Friday and unfortunately ended up dropping all 4 matches.  With 4 losses today it might seem like we could be down and out, but the good news is, all four of those teams/players are still headed to State next week, where they all plan on getting revenge for how they played today!

REGION DAY 2 - RESULTS Friday May 4th

JV REGION TOURNAMENT April 28th

JV VIKINGS 1st & 2nd DOUBLES REGION CHAMPS!!!
Saturday the JV Vikings team headed up to Riverton to play in the JV Region Tournament.  The region consists of American Fork, Lehi, Lone Peak, Riverton, Bingham and Pleasant Grove.  Each school entered 4 singles players and 4 doubles teams to play in the tournament.  This is a tournament that is not recognized by the UHSAA but all the coaches in the region feel strongly about making sure this tournament happens each year to help with the development of the JV players. The day started off a little chilly but quickly warmed up and ended up being a great day for tennis. The format of this tournament was the same format used during the season for JV.  Each match played was a single elimination 8 game Pro Set with No Ad scoring.  The Vikings had a rough start with all 4 singles players (Zach Olsen, Tanner Merrill, Kyle Stewart, Devan Wiggins) losing their first match.  Then came doubles.....The Vikings 1st doubles team Nate Church and Paul Hatch played a team from a very tough team from Riverton that went the distance, but the Vikings finally pulled it out 9-7.  # 2 doubles team Evan Spencer & Clayton Chudleigh were seeded #1 and had a BYE in their first round but played a team from Bingham in their 2nd round (semi finals) match and prevailed 8-4.  PG's 3rd doubles team Austin Chadwick & Jake Smith won their first round match 8-5 but lost to Riverton in a tough second round match 6-8.  The # 4 doubles team Rylan Harker & Justin Hymas lost to a tough Lehi team in their first round 2-8.   So with  only 2 doubles teams left in the tournament all the eliminated players, parents and friends gathered around to watch the next round of matches.  Doubles team Nate Church and Paul Hatch were next matched up for a semi final show down against a team from Lone Peak.  They were very excited to be able to play against Lone Peak again because just on the prior day, they had made their Varsity debut in the last varsity match of the season playing in the 2nd varsity doubles position against Lone Peak.  Church & Hatch lost that match so they were looking for pay back, and pay back they did.  Nate & Paul came out strong and attacked the Lone Peak team and beat them handily 8-4 to make it to the Finals.  PG now had two doubles teams playing for the Championship in the first and second doubles positions, both would play against teams from Bingham.  Nate & Paul dominated this match with big serves and overheads and some great touch shots as well to win the championship beating Bingham 8-2 becoming the 1st doubles JV Regions Champs!  In the second match Evan Spencer & Clayton Chudleigh destroyed their opponents from Bingham 8-3 playing some of the best tennis I've seen all year by Varsity or JV.  Evan was amazing with his cross court angles as well as his down the line shots.  Clayton played great as well with solid volley's and his serve was so strong at one point during the match his opponent asked him " could you slow that down please?" which was hilarious because that seemed to fuel Clayton even more because he went on to hit several more aces and secure the match to became the # 2 doubles JV Region Champs!  Thanks to all the parents and friends who came to support these JV players, it was a great day of tennis and a great way to wrap up the JV season.  I am excited about our team and these players for the coming years, I believe we have some great accomplishments ahead of us.  Also thanks to Lisa & Steve Chudleigh and Craig & Jill Smith for providing all the drinks, snacks and food for the boys at this event, it was great and greatly appreciated!  Please be sure to click on the 2012 JV Region Tournament Pictures on the right side of this blog to see some photos of this day.  A great thanks goes out to Matt Church for providing these photos as well.

PG vs. Lone Peak April 27th

VIKINGS DEFEAT KNIGHTS 3 - 2
The PG Vikings varsity boys tennis team accomplished something today that hasn't been done in a little over 12 years............they beat the Knights from Lone Peak!!!!!!!  This was the last regular season match for the Vikings and with Region coming up next week the Vikings were looking to finish the season strong, and strong they did by beating the undefeated Knights.  With the victory today, the Vikings finished up the season with a record of 7 wins and 3 losses.  This was a great match and thanks to all the parents and friends who came out to support the team.  Your support was greatly appreciated and helped the boys pull off the victory.  Their were some incredible matches today and some of best tennis of the year!  #1 Hayden de Hoyos played a tough match but Lone Peaks Scott Bohne was just to tough and won in straight sets.  Scott is by far the toughest player in the Region and unless something really bizarre were to happen should easily win the State championship.  #2 Jake Harris made quick work of Blair Robbins and beat him in straight sets.  #1 doubles team Quen Wilson and Jacob Eddington dug deep and fought off the disappointment of losing the first set after have a few points to win it.  But they didn't let that bother them, in fact they picked up their games and cruised through the next to sets for the victory!  PG's #2 doubles team making their varsity debut was Nate Church and Paul Hatch who have been dominating as the #1 JV doubles team, and earned the right to play the #2 varsity doubles spot today.  They gave it their best but fell short against the Knights team.  So with the match tied 2-2 it all came down to the the #3 singles match between PG's Nick Olsen and Lone Peaks Jens Nielson.  In their first meeting of the season Nick was able to defeat Nielson 6-4, 6-1 but Nielson showed up to battle today.  Nick jumped out to a quick start and an early break but Nielson battled back and won the first set.  Nick kicked himself in gear and came back strong in the second set beating Nielson 6-1.  With all the other varsity matches complete and his match tied at a set a piece, Nick had the privilege of having the pressure of his match being the deciding match.  Nick jumped to a quick 3-0 lead and was looking to cruise to the finish line, but Nielson battled back and pushed the match back to 4-3.  With the crowd cheering him on and giving him a little extra lift, Nick held his serve to go up 5-3, and then put the pressure on Nielson's serve on which he finally caved in and double faulted on match point giving Nick the win and the Vikings the match!  CONGRATS TO THE BOYS!!!!!

VIKINGS def. CAVEMEN 4 - 1
The PG Vikings played American Fork today in AF and defeated the Cavemen 4-1.  What was supposed to be a rainy day ended up being a good day for tennis.  The clouds were rolling in and we decided to start the match early with hope of completing the match before the weather turned ugly. The Vikings got off to a quick start with all 3 singles players cruising to victories with straight set wins securing the match victory even without the doubles teams playing yet.  The match of the day was our 1st doubles team Jacob Eddington and Quen Wilson who dropped the first set 4-6 but battled back despite the wind and rain to win the second set 7-5, then went on to win the third and the match 6-4.
